I've been dying my hair ash grey / silver for five years, & I'm still not tired of it; however, maintaining some hair colors can be hard, especially ash grey / silver hair, so here are some tips on how I maintain the color & how I take care of my hair in general:
Sulfate-free purple shampoos & conditioners: Sulfates are hella bad for your dyed hair because they strip the color from your hair, so if you haven't been using a sulfate-free shampoo & your hair's been fading hella fast, then this could be a contributing factor. Every time I go to Ulta or every time I buy shampoo from the salon & / or online, I always look at the ingredients. There aren't that many purple shampoos out there that are sulfate-free, so your choices are kind of limited. When I go to Ulta, I get a sulfate-free purple shampoo byPravana, but that one doesn't really lather well.Hair product brands like Wella, Joico, Matrix, AG, etc. are all trusted brands that I often use, but just not their purple shampoos because they all contain sulfates in them. My favorite purple shampoo that I've been using lately is the Fanola "No Yellow" sulfate-free purple shampoo. <3 Another one of my favorite shampoos & conditioners is by Olaplex; however, it's not necessarily meant for blonde & silver hair. Anyone can use it. It's the best.
Monthly toning appointment: I go back to the salon every month to get my hair toned, which is only, like, $50. Sometimes, I get hella busy though, so I'm not able to go in to the salon. When that happens, I just tone my own hair on my own time when I'm not busy. Sometimes, I'll be up at 2 am toning my hair, lol. I go online & / or to Cosmo-prof to buy some of my toners. You have to be a licensed cosmetologist & beautician to buy products from Cosmo-prof, & luckily, some of my close friends are, so they get me hair products from there all of the time, hella stuff that you can't get at Sally's, & they come over to my house & tone my hair. Sometimes, I'll use a toner by Wella from Sally's. If you wanna tone your hair with Sally's products, I use the Wella Color Charm Liquid Hair Toner in "T18", the Wella Color Charm Liquid Hair Toner & Additive in "050", & you can get 20 volume developer from Sally's, too.
Roux Temporary Hair Color Rinse in "Silver Lining": When Niki Nguyen (@theniksters), did my hair, this is one of the products that she recommended to me to brighten, maintain, & tone my ash grey / silver hair.
Dry Bar: I'm so obsessed with Dry Bar. I'm a regular at the Santana Row location in San Jose, & I'm their MVP. They don't provide any cut & color services. They just wash & style my hair. I just opened up a membership with them, & I still wash my hair outside of Dry Bar, too, but I go there twice a week for a wash, a "Mai Tai" blow-out or a "Dirty Martini" blow-out, & to get my hair round-brushed, & I'd much rather spend $45 every time to get my hair washed, massaged, round-brushed, etc., or maybe I'm just hella bougie like that, lol. I always feel like money after my usual 8 am appointments. My feather-y blow-outs have gotten me a lot of compliments, thanks to the girls & their
group effort at Dry Bar. <3
Biosilk: I love putting a little bit of this stuff in my hair before I straighten & / or style it with my favorite Nume wand.
Silk pillows actually help your hair & skin more than cotton pillows, & I'm not just saying that because I'm a bougie & spoiled ass bitch, even though I am, because some people probably think that I'm doing the most with silk pillows, lol.
Balmain Hair Couture "Ash Toner"
Dry shampoo: Your dyed hair fades every single time you wash your hair, so some people only wash it a couple of times a week. I have to wash it at least every other day because my hair gets oily hella fast. When it does, I use the Detox dry shampoo from Dry Bar. My hair smells very expensive after using this.
Blue tint / hair dye: I put a liiittle bit of blue in my hair when I went to the salon to go back to ash grey / silver hair because blue fades to grey over time.
Ouai Leave-in Conditioner: This is a great de-tangler.
Morfose Milk Therapy Two-Phase Conditioner: I learned about this from @Camilakilla on Instagram, & I love it so much. It smells like cookies!
Ouai Dry Texture Foam: I love Jen Atkin for making this. I want her to play with my hair. This gives my hair that perfect, messy, & gritty look.
Verb Dry Ghost Oil: Unlock the secrets to your best hair.
Byredo hair perfume: One of the very few hair products that I've ever finished.
Living Proof "Blow-out" Hair Spray
Dry Bar "Triple Sec. 3-in-1" Hair Spray: I'm nothing without texturizing hair-spray, & this stuff's legendary. If you spray it with your hair upside-down, it's like an instant back-comb without teasing. Talk about body-building for real. So much volume!
When people ask me how I maintain my grey hair, I jokingly just say that it's from stress.
I get regular trim appointments, a glaze, an Olaplex treatment, my scalp massaged, & my hair round-brushed.
I always tuck my hair behind my ears when I'm air-drying my hair because Alexa Chung does that, lol.
